L-3 Communications to Provide F/A-18D Simulator to Malaysia

US-based L-3 Communications has won a $19.5 million Foreign Military Sales deal to supply a tactical operational flight trainer for the Boeing F/A-18D Hornet to Malaysia.

The fixed-based simulator will have positions for both a pilot and weapons systems officer, L-3 Communications says.

The simulator will include a 360˚ high definition visual display. In addition, the deal covers a brief/debrief station and logistics support.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force has a fleet of eight twin-seat F/A-18Ds, as recorded by Flightglobal's MiliCAS database.

CAE, Brunei Sign MOU for Helo Training Center

SINGAPORE — Canada’s CAE will set up a military and civilian helicopter training center with Brunei as part of a multipurpose training operation, CAE and the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) announced at the Singapore Airshow on Feb. 15.

The groups signed a memorandum of understanding to build a facility focusing initially on local military and civilian helicopter pilots. The facility, located in Rimba, would be the region’s largest helicopter simulator training facility, a joint statement said.

The $80 million investment program will later expand to cover training in the oil and gas, public security, and crisis management sectors.


Marc Parent, CAE’s chief executive, declined to give details of timing and helicopter types for training and simulation but said talks had been going on for about a year and the project was “on a fast track.”

The training tie-up comes on the back of a decision by Brunei to expand its rotorcraft capabilities with the purchase of 12 S-70i Black Hawks to add to the air force’s fleet of Sikorsky machines. Deliveries on the new Black Hawks get underway next year.

Existing Bell helicopters, which now form part of the fleet, will be phased out.

CAE and BEDB would sign a joint venture partnership to pursue the opportunity, Parent said.

On Feb. 15, 2011, CAE and Brunei announced a deal for the creation of a National Modelling and Simulation Centre. The organization would aid military and other government agencies with tasks including force-structure options analysis and mission rehearsal exercises.

RAAF Super Hornets to Receive New Air Combat Training System

SAN DIEGO, California – Cubic Defense Applications, Inc., a defense systems business of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB), has received a new contract valued at more than $11 million. Cubic and its principal subcontractor, DRS Training and Control Systems LLC, a unit of DRS Defense Solutions LLC, will provide the P5 Tactical Combat Training System (P5TCTS) to the Royal Australian Air Force for use in training F/A-18F Super Hornet crews.

“This new system represents a step forward for the RAAF,” said Michael Rodriguez, Senior Program Manager, Air Ranges. “Australia currently operates a fourth generation Cubic air combat training system at RAAF Base Williamtown for training on its F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. The RAAF decided to purchase the fifth generation P5TCTS for use on its newest F/A-18F aircraft operating at RAAF Base Amberley. This new system will allow for interoperability with the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft that the RAAF is planning to purchase in the near future. All F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for Australia will be delivered with an on-board, internal P5 airborne subsystem.”

P5TCTS for the Super Hornet will be delivered in late 2012 to RAAF Base Amberley near Brisbane, Queensland. Amberley was previously home to the RAAF’s F-111 aircraft, which were recently retired from service and were replaced with two squadrons of F/A-18F Super Hornets. The RAAF’s new P5TCTS will be very similar to the current U.S. Navy TCTS system and will include airborne instrumentation pods built by principal subcontractor DRS, transportable ground systems with live monitor, and portable ground subsystems, which includes Cubic’s Individual Combat Aircrew Display System (ICADS) software for debriefing. For this effort Cubic , has also been contracted to provide software and hardware to ensure that the legacy Cubic-developed
Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation (ACMI) system operating at Williamtown will be able to “merge data” to allow for postmission debriefing between the Classic Hornet and Super Hornet aircrews.

Amberley squadrons will also receive live monitoring (LM) capability. The LM enables real-time monitor and uplink control of P5TCTS-podded aircraft via Cubic’s ground stations.

Cubic delivered Australia’s first rangeless, instrumented air combat training system to RAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales, in 2007. Cubic Defence Australia employees maintain the ACMI pods and ground stations there.

The contracting authority for the Foreign Military Sale is the Air Armament Command/EBYK (Range Instrumentation Systems Branch), Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Cubic has a number of previous international sales of P5CTS/TCTS. Additional sales are expected in the near future.

Cirrus Wins Contract To Upgrade RAAF Air Combat Officer Simulation Trainer

SYDNEY-Cirrus Managing Director Mr. Peter Freed has announced that Cirrus has been contracted by DMO Training Aircraft Systems Program Office (TASPO), to develop and deliver to the RAAF School of Air Warfare (SAW, East Sale) an upgrade to the Cirrus Air Combat Officer Training System (ACO-TS).

The upgraded system will provide enhanced sensor simulation, integrated team training, and improved instructor scenario/library management.

The Cirrus ACO-TS is based on Cirrus Simulation Training Network and Sensor Simulation Engine (STN & SSE) technologies which have been adapted to meet the RAAFs requirements under previous contracts.

Mr Freed stated that "We are very pleased to have been contracted to further evolve the Cirrus ACO-TS solution and to continue our excellent relationship with TASPO and SAW. In the last six months, the ACO-TS has proven itself in continual operational use, and it is very satisfying to see high technology indigenously developed by the Australian SME sector providing such benefit to the ADF."

New A109 Helicopter Training Simulator for Air Force

A new flight simulator complex was commissioned at Ohakea today by the Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Peter Stockwell.

“The A109 simulator and accompanying Virtual Interactive Procedure Trainer are critical components of the newly introduced integrated training system for future New Zealand Defence Force helicopter aircrew,” said Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell.

As a part of that training system the simulator will provide the Royal New Zealand Air Force with a cost effective means of training A109 aircrew and those destined to fly the NH90 and SH2G helicopters. The simulator provides significant financial savings as the operating cost of the simulator is approximately 10% of the A109 helicopter operating cost.

“The simulator cost EUR9.3M and it has an expected service life of at least 30 years. It will provide approximately 1400 hours of training per year but it has the capacity to provide in excess of twice this, if required. At the planned rate, the simulator will effectively pay for itself in less than five years,” said Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell.

One of the primary functions of the recently introduced A109LUH helicopters was as a training platform for NZDF NH90 and SH2G aircrew. AgustaWestland, suppliers of the A109 helicopters, also provided the Virtual Interactive Procedure Trainer and the Flight Simulator.

“The simulator is an excellent training platform as it allows high risk exercises (such as engine and other equipment failures) to be conducted safely rather than in the helicopter. It also allows flying training in bad weather and poor visibility conditions as we can simulate the external environment to suit our training requirements.”

“Both world class training devices will be housed at Ohakea and used for training NZDF helicopter pilots and crewmen. Approximately 50% of all A109 helicopter training will be conducted in the simulator, making significant training efficiencies and cost savings,” said Air Vice-Marshal Stockwell.

Virtual Interactive Procedures Trainer (VIPT)

This is a PC-based system that replicates the A109LUH cockpit using touch screens and allows training in the use of individual systems (e.g. autopilot) and of integrated systems (e.g. how the autopilot affects navigation and flight displays). The VIPT is capable of simulating all aspects of instrument flight using the aircraft’s automatic flight control system.

Flight Simulator

This is a full reproduction of the A109LUH cockpit within a cabin containing a semi-spherical screen and a visual system comprising seven projectors. The visual system displays an external view of the synthetic world on to a 220o x 60o screen. The simulator includes a six axis electro-pneumatic motion system, a seat vibration system and a sound system that models aircraft and environmental sounds. The simulator is capable of simulating flight by day and night, and is Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible. The control station allows the instructor to set and change weather and sea conditions, change the time of day, reposition the aircraft instantly, insert fixed or moving models (e.g. aircraft, vehicles, ships), and inject a wide range of malfunctions and emergencies.

CAE Announces King Air 350i with Pro Line 21 Training in Australia

Dubai, U.A.E., – (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) – CAE today announced at the Dubai Airshow that it will deploy a new CAE 5000 Series full-flight simulator (FFS) in the Melbourne, Australia area in the first half of 2012 for training pilots and maintenance technicians for the Hawker Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft with Pro Line 21 avionics.



"CAE continues to expand our capabilities globally in order to provide customers with the most advanced training options available in close proximity to where they operate,” said Jeff Roberts, CAE’s Group President, Civil Simulation Products, Training and Services. "The Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia region is among the fastest growing in aviation, and we look forward to building on the established CAE presence in Australia to serve this market with business aviation training solutions such as the King Air 350i."








The FFS will incorporate the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 integrated avionics suite. It will be qualified to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators, by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Training credits are also expected for operators of King Air 200 aircraft. Training will be provided at a location in the Melbourne area to be determined in consultation with customers in the region.



In addition to business aircraft operators, the new King Air 350i FFS is expected to be used for training military pilots in the region.



Expanding CAE’s business aviation training presence into Australia continues the company’s growth in the region. CAE recently launched CAE Global Academy Perth, a joint venture with China Southern Airlines in Jandakot and Merredin, Australia for training ab initio cadets to become airline pilots. CAE Australia Pty Ltd also has multiple contracts with the Commonwealth of Australia in support of the Australian Defence Forces (ADF). These contracts include providing simulation equipment, maintenance support and training services for platforms such as the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport, C-130H/J transports, MRH90 helicopters, S-70B Seahawk and Sea King naval helicopters, and S-70A Black Hawk utility helicopter.



Melbourne will become one of 10 CAE locations worldwide for business aviation training. Current locations include Dallas, Phoenix, New York, London, Amsterdam, and Dubai. In 2012, CAE will add Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Melbourne. And CAE has announced an upcoming business aviation training centre in Asia in 2013.

CAE Upgraded RAAF's C-130J Simulator

RAAF C-130J Hercules full-flight and mission simulator upgraded to provide enhanced tactical training capabilities

Sydney, Australia – (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) – CAE Australia today announced that it has upgraded the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) C-130J Hercules full-flight and mission simulator (FFMS) to provide additional tactical training capabilities. The upgrade was completed on budget and without taking the simulator out of service.

CAE Australia, prime contractor under the Management and Support of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Aerospace Simulators (MSAAS) contract, upgraded the C-130J simulator with a new radar warning receiver (RWR) simulation, which will be used to provide RAAF C-130J aircrews with early warning and threat detection alerts during training. Instructors will also be able to insert various radar threats into the simulator training sessions to provide RAAF aircrews with realistic tactical mission training scenarios.

“The addition of the RWR simulation to the C-130J simulator is consistent with the Commonwealth’s objective to ensure the Royal Australian Air Force’s training systems are concurrent with the platforms they simulate,” said Peter Redman, acting Managing Director, CAE Australia Pty Ltd. “We completed this simulator upgrade without any downtime to current training, and in advance of the upgrades being completed on the actual aircraft. The RAAF C-130J aircrews will now be well-trained and prepared as the RWR-capable Hercules aircraft re-enter service.”

The addition of the RWR simulation not only ensures the ongoing fidelity of the C-130J simulator, but also enhances the tactical training capabilities of the C-130J aircrew training system. The C-130J FFMS includes CAE’s Interactive Tactical Environment Management System (ITEMS) for creating complex tactical environment scenarios, as well as Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) functionality so the C-130J FFMS can be networked with the C-130H FFMS co-located at RAAF Base Richmond.

CAE Australia performed the upgrade under CAE’s Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO) Letter of Authority. As a certified AEO, CAE is delegated design approval authority for engineering upgrades on in-service simulators for the Australian Defence Forces.

Jurnas.com KEPALA Staf TNI Angkatan Udara (KSAU), Marsekal TNI Imam Sufaat meresmikan penggunaan Simulator Helikopter NAS-332 Super Puma yang dikelola Fasilitas Latihan (Faslat) Wing 4, Lanud Atang Senjaya, Bogor, Kamis (29/9).

Dalam siaran pers Kadispenau, Marsekal Pertama TNI Azman Yunus, yang diterima Jurnal Nasional, Kamis (29/9), KSAU mengatakan simulator NAS-332 Super Puma adalah full flight simulator jenis rotary wing pertama dimiliki TNI AU dan ditempatkan di Lanud Atang Sendjaja.

Menurutnya, pembuatan Simulator NAS-332 mengacu pada pesawat NAS-332 Super Puma type L1 konfigurasi VIP dari SkadronUdara 17.

Pesawat helicopter ini merupakan buatan PT Dirgantara Indonesia, Bandung yang menggunakan engine Makila 1A1. Selain konfigurasi VIP ada penambahan fasilitas latihan dalam simulator yaitu berupa latihan hoist, sling, fast rope dan para troop yang merupakan kemampuan dari pesawat NAS-332 Super Puma type L1/C1 dengan konfigurasi tactical transport.

“Dengan adanya Simulator kita dapat mengurangi resiko kecelakaan dan efisiensi penggunaan jam terbang serta ekonomis,” kata KSAU.

Simulator NAS-332 mempunyai beberapa fungsi antara lain familirisasi konfigurasi cockpit pesawat NAS-332 Super Puma type L1/C1, familirisasi checklist normal dan emergency procedur mulai dari engine start sampai dengan engine shutdown, memberikan penerbangan dengan misi dan situasi tertentu, memberikan latihan navigasi serta memberikan latihan terbang instrument.

“Kemampuan lain dari simulator NAS-332 Super Puma adalah mampu mensimulasikan adanya kerusakan pada sistem atau komponen utama pada saat latihan penerbangan dilaksanakan,” katanya.

Full Flight simulator NAS-332 Super Puma merupakan peralatan elektronika yang terdiri dari hardware dan software yang bekerja secara integrasi untuk mengelola berbagai program data sehingga mensimulasikan performa pesawat NAS-332 Super Puma secara real time seperti instrument system, avionic system, visual system, motion system, aural cue system menyerupai performa pesawat yang sesungguhnya.

Indonesia Akan Bangun Simulator Sukhoi

Bogor (ANTARA) - Indonesia akan segera membangun simulator pesawat jet tempur Sukhoi untuk menempa keterampilan dan kemampuan para pilot pesawat tempur tersebut secara intensif, efektif dan efisien.

Kepala Staf Angkatan Udara Marsekal TNI Imam Sufaat kepada ANTARA usai peresmian simulator Super Puma NAS 332 di Bogor, Kamis mengatakan, "penjajakannya sudah lama dan akan mulai dimantapkan pada 2012,".

Ia menambahkan, pembangunan simulator itu akan diusahakan melibatkan PT Dirgantara Indonesia dengan beberapa perusahaan mancanegara.

"Perusahaan mancanegara kemungkinan bisa dari Rusia, China atau Kanada. Ini semua kita jajaki," kata Kasau.

Ia menegaskan, dengan adanya simulator tersebut maka keahlian dan kemampuan para pilot pesawat jet tempur Sukhoi TNI Angkatan Udara dapat terus diasah dan ditingkatkan dengan efektif dan efisien.

"Bayangkan jika kita berlatih dengan pesawat yang sesungguhnya. Berapa biaya yang harus dikeluarkan...bisa ratusan juta rupiah. Di Rusia pun pesawat Sukhoi tidak dipakai setiap hari," tutur Kasau.

Ia menambahkan, pembangunan simulator Sukhoi akan ditempatkan di Skuadron Udara 11 Pangkalan Udara Sultan Hassanuddin, Makassar.

"Ini untuk memudahkan para penerbang menjangkau simulator. Tidak seperti para penerbang Hawk yang berada di Pontianak yang harus ke Pekanbaru karena simulatornya di sana. Itu tidak efektif dan efisien. Jadi kita upayakan simulator dibangun tidak jauh dari pangkalan pesawat atau heli dimaksud," ujar Imam.

Indonesia selama ini mengirimkan penerbang Sukhoinya ke Rusia selaku produsen dan pengguna, atau China yang telah memiliki pabrik dan simulator Sukhoi.

Indonesia telah memiliki Sukhoi sejak 2003 dan kini telah memiliki 10 unit pesawat Sukhoi dengan berbagai jenis. Kini Indonesia tengah menjajaki pembelian enam unit lagi pesawat sejenis untuk memperkuat skuadron tempurnya.

AWD Simulator Contract for Kongsberg

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA ) has been awarded a Command Team Trainer Simulation Infrastructure contract under which KDA will support Raytheon Australia Pty Ltd (AWD Systems Engineer) in the delivery of this central component of the Air Warfare Destroyer Command Team Trainer (CTT).

The Simulation Infrastructure is based on Kongsberg’s PROTEUS Naval Training Technology and will provide the CTT with exercise control and a common synthetic environment for integration of the Aegis Weapon System and the other Hobart Class sensors and effectors.

The Simulation Infrastructure also provides LINK 11/16 and DIS interfaces for external joint collaborative training.

The contract is an extension of the Australian Tactical Interface (ATI) contract for the Air Warfare Destroyer signed in June 2009 between KDA and Raytheon Australia, on behalf of the AWD Alliance.

Australia Defence Force Chooses Meggitt Virtual Training

Multi-million dollar operations and maintenance contract for virtual training

Meggitt, a leading international company specialising in components and sub-systems for aerospace, defence and energy markets announces that Meggitt Training Systems has won an AUD$29M (USD$30.8M) contract with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to operate and maintain the primary small and supporting arms simulation training centres known as WTSS (Weapon Training Simulation System) facilities.

Created to train soldiers, sailors and airmen in the rules of engagement, judgment, marksmanship and indirect fire, the WTSS programme, which includes Indirect Fire Forward Air Control (I-FACT™) and Indirect Fire Training (IFT) systems, is provided exclusively by Meggitt Training Systems. It builds on a decade of supply to the ADF of systems, weapons, software, courseware, systems operation, maintenance and site management. Overall, Meggitt has a significant profile in Australia, with an estimated 90% share of the market in dismounted virtual weapons training.

The operations and maintenance contract, running from July 2011 to June 2016, follows an original award in 1999. Coordinated from Meggitt’s facility in Albury, New South Wales, Meggitt Training Systems will provide operations and maintenance for 18 sites located at major troop locations in every state and territory throughout Australia. The contract will be supported by around 70 Meggitt personnel.

Ronald Vadas, President of Meggitt Training Systems commented: “This contract award reflects ten years supporting the ADF’s training vision with innovative training and simulation systems. They will continue to be backed up by our highly experienced trainers—mostly ex-service personnel—who know how to maximise the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for success on the modern battlefield.”

In 2011, Navy Vietnam were supplemented by two modern frigates, such as "Gepard-3.9", built by JSC "Zelenodolsk Plant. AM Gorky," the project of "Zelenodolsk design bureau."

To prepare the crews of these ships was established integrated simulator "Laguna 11 661", which was developed and put the company "Kronshtadt," group company "Transas". Integrated simulator "Laguna 11 661" is designed to train crews and the crews of the frigate "Gepard-3.9" (based on the patrol vessel project 11661) of navigation, navigational safety of navigation and ship management for combat use and operation of rocket and artillery, mine, radio arms control and operation of the main power plant, power systems and spacecraft systems and provide general ship takeoff / landing ship helicopter.

At this simulator can carry out all types of training - both theoretical and practical training, group training, and complex, control and record-teaching, testing organization and combat coordination of crews.

The simulator is placed in a separate building and includes:

- central office leadership training, has workstations for three instructors and equipped with various control systems for software and hardware of the simulator and course of the educational process, including video surveillance system for the classrooms;

- navigation and control module, representing a full-scale mock-ship wheelhouse with a system simulation environment with a visual field of view 270 degrees;

- main command post, simulating combat arms ship control stations, means targeting, battle management information systems, electronic warfare and passive jamming;

- room service radio stations, including replicas of light air and surface situation;

- electromechanical module that simulates the space ship's office of energy and vitality, power, local control station, the main power plant;

- start command post equipped with a system simulation environment with a visual field of view 90 degrees and provides for practice of interaction with a helicopter deck;

- mock artillery tower complex AK-176 and ring sight guns AK-630M system simulation environment with a visual field of view 90 degrees;

- class of the problem and the results of parsing exercises, equipped with modern interactive educational technology. A distinctive feature of simulators series "Laguna" is the widespread use of existing hardware designs and a single simulation environment.

According to the results of acceptance tests simulator was praised by the faculty of the Naval Academy, the crews of the frigates Vietnamese "Gepard-3.9" command and the Navy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
