BATURAJA, KOMPAS - Tahun 2014 ditargetkan Indonesia sudah mampu membuat sendiri roket berdaya jelajah di atas 100 kilometer. Roket tersebut merupakan proyek jangka panjang dan kolaborasi teknokrat dan birokrat.

"Ini sebuah perjalanan maraton kebangkitan industri pertahanan kita," kata Wakil Menteri Pertahanan Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Rabu (28/3), seusai menyaksikan uji coba R-Han 122 milimeter di Pusat Latihan Tempur TNI AD Baturaja, Sumatera Selatan.

Uji coba ini sudah mengalami perkembangan dibandingkan uji-uji sebelurnnya. Sebelumnya, November 2011, peluncuran roket dilakukan dari dudukan berupa karung. Saat ini, PT Pindad sudah membuat peluncur roket yang terdiri atas 16 tabung.

Sjafrie menilai, terjadi kemajuan yang signifikan walaupun harus ada pengembangan kualitas. Rencana berikutnya adalah mengadakan transfer teknologi untuk perbaikan. "Targetnya, jarak tempuhnya tahun 2014 sudah tiga digit dan akan menggunakan seluruh kemampuan multilaunch rocket system," ujarnya.

Saat ini R-Han 122 yang berkaliber 122 millimeter itu memiliki jarak tempuh 14 kilometer. Roket ini diproduksi bersama oleh Kementerian Pertahanan serta Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi.
PT Dahana membuat bahan peledaknya, PT Krakatau Steel membuat baja untuk nozzle dan merakitnya, sementara PT Dirgantara Indonesia memproduksi berbagai komponen seperti selongsong dan sirip.

PT Pindad membuat hulu ledak (warhead) dan memodifikasi mobil untuk peluncur 16 tabung yang bisa berputar 360 derajat.

"Uji coba hari ini penting karena berarti kita sudah membuktikan bahwa konsep kita sudah benar, tinggal memperbaiki saja," kata Direktur Utarna PT Pindad Adik A Soedarsono.

Roket dalam strategi militer sangat penting dalam penangkalan dan penolakan.

Komandan Pusat Kesenjataan Artileri Medan Kodiklat TNI AD Brigjen Aryadi Patmanegara menjelaskan, kalau sudah bisa diproduksi di dalam negeri, akan sangat efisien. Sebab, seperti roket yang dibeli Singapura dan Malaysia, dengan jangkauan 43 kilometer dan 40 kilometer, harga seluruh sistemnya, termasuk 18 kendaraan peluncur, mencapai Rp 3 triliun. (EDN)

Puluhan Roket Produksi Indonesia Berhasil Diujicobakan

Baturaja, Sumsel (ANTARA News) - Sebanyak 50 Roket R-Han 122 produksi Indonesia, berhasil diujicobakan dengan ditembakkan ke sasaran di udara, di Pusat Latihan Tempur TNI AD Baturaja, Kabupaten Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), Sumatera Selatan, Rabu.

Deputi Menristek Bidang Produktivitas dan Relevansi Riset Iptek, Budi Teguh Raharjo sempat menunjukkan contoh roket R-Han 122 itu, kepada Wakil Menteri Pertahanan, Letjen TNI Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, sebelum melakukan uji coba roket tersebut.

Sebanyak 50 buah Roket R-Han 122 diujicobakan sebagai hasil pengembangan konsorsium dari Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi dan komunitas iptek serta industri strategis, guna mendukung kemandirian roket 2014 bagi Kementerian Pertahanan.

Roket R-Han 122 memiliki kecepatan maksimum 1,8 mach dan jarak tembak hingga 15 km.


Selain Wakil Menhan Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, sejumlah pejabat Pemptov Sumsel dan Pemkab OKU, beberapa petinggi TNI, antara lain Pangdam II/Sriwijaya Mayor Jenderal TNI Nugroho Widyotomo dan Komandan Kodiklat TNI AD Letnan Jenderal TNI Gatot Numantyo ikut pula saat menyaksikan uji coba roket R-Han 122.

Usai peluncuran, Wamenhan juga berkesempatan melakukan pengecekan pada mobil peluncur roket, untuk selanjutnya akan terus dikembangkan sebagai bagian program kemandirian penyediaan alat utama sistem pertahanan (alutsista) nasional.

Menurut Kepala Biro Hukum dan Humas Kemenristek, Anny Sulaswatty, Roket R-Han 122 itu merupakan produksi hasil kerja sama anak bangsa Indonesia, diwujudkan melalui penelitian bersama PT Pindad, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, dan PT Dahana, didukung penuh Kemenristek.

Ujicoba dan demo penembakan Roket R-Han 122 itu menandai keberhasilan bangsa Indonesia untuk menuju kemandirian produksi roket nasional di masa depan.

Astross II Gandakan Kuasa Tempur TD

KUALA LUMPUR – Tentera Darat (TD) bakal memiliki satu lagi rejimen sistem pelancar roket berganda (SPRB) jenis Astros II buatan Brazil tidak lama lagi bagi menggandakan kuasa tempur negara.

Sebanyak 18 unit SPRB Astross II akan dibeli bagi melengkapkan kekuatan Briged Artileri Roket yang ketika ini mempunyai dua rejimen roket jenis yang sama dan sebuah rejimen artileri pengesan.

Rejimen baharu SPRB Astross II itu nanti dijangka ditempatkan di Sabah.

Difahamkan, pembelian aset terbaharu itu telah dipersetujui Tentera Darat (TD) menerusi belanjawan pertahanan dalam Rancangan Malaysia Ke-10.

Sumber memberitahu, kontrak perolehan akan dimeterai antara Kementerian Pertahanan dengan pembekalnya pada Pameran Perkhidmatan Pertahanan Asia 2012 di sini pada April ini.

“Pembelian ini adalah sebahagian daripada rancangan jangka panjang TD bagi memperkukuhkan kuasa tempur khasnya, Briged Roket.

“Ia juga merupakan strategi bagi memperkasakan sistem pertahanan darat dengan adanya dua rejimen roket di Semenanjung dan di Sabah atau Sarawak,” ujar sumber tersebut di sini semalam.

Experts Doubt North Korea’s Rocket Upgrade

Military experts and insiders downplayed Monday media reports that North Korea has succeeded in doubling the range of its 240-millimeter multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) in time to celebrate the centennial of the nation’s founder Kim Il-sung’s birth in April.

They said it was nonsense to believe that the impoverished North has made significant progress in the development of a propulsion system that doubles the range of the rockets.

Citing an anonymous government source, media outlets, including Yonhap News Agency, claimed that the communist North recently completed upgrading its model of the 22-round M-1991, a truck-mounted MLRS.

They argued that the South’s entire capital area, home to more than 20 million people, will come under the range of the modified rocket, dubbed “Juche 100 Gun,” as it is capable of travelling more than 120 kilometers.

A senior rocket expert at the Defense Acquisition and Program Administration (DAPA) said the media reports were baseless unless the North has successfully developed a propulsion system that is a quantum leap ahead of advanced countries, including the United States and Russia.

“I’m highly skeptical that the North has technology that even the United States has yet to develop and the world has yet to witness,” he said.

“The range of the South’s 227-millimeter multiple launch rocket system is limited to 45 to 46 kilometers, despite the fact that it has employed the advanced technology of the United States.”

The expert said the range may be doubled if nearly all of the rocket’s explosives are removed to add more fuel. However, then not only the weapon’s accuracy, but its impact too would drop radically.

A senior missile expert at the Ministry of National Defense (MND) also downplayed media reports, saying military intelligence authorities have yet to recognize any noticeable improvement in the North’s 240-millimeter M-1991 rockets.

“If the North has already deployed such a long range rocket as reported, intelligence sources would have spotted it much earlier during the testing of such weapons,” he said.

An intelligence official at the MND concurred with him, saying no intelligence has been received on a major breakthrough in the improvement of the communist nation’s MLRS.

“I’m not sure how the news was generated. It is doubtful that the North has succeeded in doubling the range of a rocket,” he said.

“The North might have intentionally tipped off sources to such misleading information in an attempt to exaggerate its military might without actually having to prove it.”

He said the Pyongyang might have been pressured to do so to dodge criticism of failing to fulfill its pledge of becoming a “powerful and prosperous nation” by 2012.

Officials of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) declined to comment on the matter, saying they are not allowed to provide any explanation to North Korean weapons development.

The North is known to have been operating two types of 240-millimeter rocket launchers, the 12-round M-1985 and the 22-round M-1991.

According to media reports, intelligence officials here believe the Stalinist state will likely unveil an upgraded version of the M-1991 to the public during a massive military parade on April 15 this year, the 100th birthday of the late Kim.

Turkey loses bid for Indonesia submarines

Indonesia picks up a South Korean offer for three U209 model submarines instead of a Turkish-German joint offer. Still, the two countries may bid for a tender for the more developed U214 models, Jakarta says.

Indonesia has informed a German-Turkish partnership that South Korea has won Jakarta’s competition for U209 submarines and that the duo should instead focus on the sale of more-developed U214 subs to the Southeast Asian giant, a senior Turkish official has said.

The message was conveyed during the visit of Adm. Agus Suhartono, the chief of staff of Indonesia’s military forces, to Turkey last week, the Turkish official said this weekend.

Turkey, led by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, SSM, and Germany, led by ThyssenKrupp’s shipyard, HDW, entered the Indonesian Navy’s competition of more than $1 billion after it came to an end, effectively ensuring Seoul’s victory.

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering announced on Dec. 22 that it had won the Indonesian deal $1.1 billion for three submarines.

As for Turkey, a $2 billion submarine deal with HDW for the joint manufacture of six U214 platforms formally took effect in July, the German company said. Turkish procurement officials also confirmed the information. “As a longstanding partner and supplier to the Turkish Navy, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems can now begin executing the order. The order will contribute to securing employment at [ThyssenKrupp’s] HDW in Kiel, as well as at many subcontractors in Germany and Turkey, for the next 10 years,” it said.

A major loan deal between German banks and the Turkish Treasury rescued the multibillion-dollar submarine contract between the Turkish state and Howaldswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) on the last day of 2010, Turkish procurement officials said earlier.

“We will try to work hard to meet the requirements for the second competition [for the U214 deal],” said the Turkish procurement official.The Indonesian side also offered a number of consolations to the Turkish side.

The Indonesians will come up with a $100 million Turkish proposal to make military radios produced by Aselsan, the procurement official said.

The Indonesians separately plan to propose a facility to produce Roketsan-made missiles after they sign a contract with the company.

Jakarta will also produce FNSS-made 8x8 vehicles.

Turkey and Indonesia are two of the largest Muslim countries and are keen to develop their defense industries and ties.

TNI AD Lirik Peluncur Roket Canggih, HIMARS

Jurnas.com SELAIN pengadaan main battle tank, TNI AD juga melirik multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) untuk penguatan pertahanan darat. MLRS ini juga dapat difungsikan sebagai antipesawat tempur.

Kepala Staf Angkatan Darat (KSAD) Jenderal TNI Pramono Edhi Wibowo dalam paparannya saat raker antara Komisi I dan Kementerian Pertahanan mengungkapkan, rencana pengadaan MLRS ini sudah dimasukkan dalam shopping list alat utama sistem senjata (alutsista) TNI AD. Salah satu yang menjadi incaran adalah rudal tangguh High Mobility Artilery Rocket System (HIMARS). “Untuk penangkis serangan udara karena yang kami punya saat ini kelahiran tahun 1960-an. Setelah tahu harganya akan kami sampaikan,”kata KSAD di gedung DPR RI, Selasa (24/1).

Dengan memiliki senjata canggih semacam ini, KSAD yakin, Indonesia akan memiliki efek gentar terhadap negara-negara lain sehingga tidak akan mengganggu kedaulatan negara. Tidak kalah dengan tank Leopard yang mampu merontokkan beberapa tank dengan hanya satu tank Leopard, HIMARS ini memiliki jarak tembak sejauh 70 km dengan akurasi 10 meter.

“Bahkan jarak tembaknya bisa ditingkatkan menjadi 300 km. Sehingga negara lain akan gentar. Tak akan ada lagi patok Indonesia diusik. Lu cabut patok, gue sikat," selorohnya.

Peluncur roket HIMARS yang dikembangkan Lockheed Martin pada 1996 adalah senjata mobile dengan setiap peluncur yang mampu menembakkan enam roket dalam waktu 45 detik. Selain Amerika Serikat, yang merupakan negara produsen, Uni Emirat Arab dan Singapura juga telah memiliki rudal canggih ini. HIMARS baru diproduksi secara resmi melalui kontrak yang ditanda tangani pada Desember 2005.

Sebelumnya, KSAD menyebutkan telah menyusun daftar belanja (shopping list) pengadaan alutsista untuk mencapai Minimum Essential Forces. Selain MBT dan MLRS, TNI AD juga akan melakukan pengadaan helikopter serang, meriam 155 dengan jarak tembak 40 km, dan helikopter serbu.

Kemhan RI gelar Uji Coba Roket R-Han dan Mortir 81 Pindad di Puslatpur Kodiklat TNI AD

Kemhan RI menggelar uji coba penembakan Roket R-Han, Bodem dan Base Plate Mortir 81 Pindad yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 24 s.d 26 Nopember 2011 di Daerah Latihan Puslatpur Kodiklat TNI AD.

Kegiatan uji coba ini melibatkan beberapa Kementrian, Instansi Militer maupun Sipil antara lain dari Kemhan RI, Kemristek, Kemperind, Pindad, LAPAN, PT DI, PT KS, PT Dahana, BMKG, Marinir TNI AL, Puslatpur Kodiklat TNI AD dan personel dari satuan Dam II/Swj.

Hadir dalam acara tersebut pejabat dari Kemhan RI, Laksamana Muda TNI Dwi Ujianto, Mayjen TNI Zainal Fahri Tamzis yang didampingi oleh Danpuslatpur Kodiklat TNI AD Kolonel Inf Moch. Fachrudin.

Adapun senjata dan roket yang diuji coba antara lain Modem dan Base Plate Mo 81 Pindad, Roket R-Han 122 mm, Roket D 1220, RWX 200, RKX 200 dan RTX 100. Senjata tersebut merupakan hasil dari penelitian Kemristek, PT Pindad, LAPAN, PT DI, PT KS, PT Dahana yang dikoordinir oleh Kemhan RI.

Pelaksanaan kegiatan uji coba ini dapat berjalan dengan aman dan lancar.

Satuan Armed Memodernisasi Sistem Senjata

CIMAHI, (PRLM).- Satuan Artileri Medan (Armed) TNI AD segera memodernisasi Alutsista (Alat Utama Sistem Senjata) dengan mendatangkan meriam-meriam baru pada 2012 nanti. Seluruh prajurit Armed dituntut segera menguasai kecakapan penguasaan peralatan tempur baru tersebut.

Komandan Pusat Kesenjataan (Pussen) Armed Brigjen TNI Ariyadi Padmanegara mengungkapkan, modernisasi alutsista berupa penggantian meriam kaliber 76 milimeter (mm)/Gun menjadi meriam 105 mm. Juga direncanakan penyiapan Batalyon Armed untuk meriam kaliber 155 mm dan Batalyon Armed roket MLRS (multiple launcher rocket system).

“Sebagai konsekuensi logis modernisasi tersebut, seluruh prajurit Armed dituntut memiliki penguasaan kemampuan teknis kecabangan yang dipadukan dengan adaptasi ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi yang tinggi. Juga dibutuhkan tingkat kesiapan fisik memadai,” ucapnya saat memberikan sambutan dalam “Syukuran Hari Ulang Tahun ke-66 Armed TNI AD”, Senin (5/12), di Pusat Diklat Armed, Kota Cimahi.

Meriam baru kaliber 105 mm memiliki jangkauan hingga 18 kilometer. Spesifikasi ini jauh lebih canggih dibandingan alutsista lawas berupa meriam kaliber 76 mm yang hanya mampu menjangkau sasaran terjauh 8 kilometer. Meriam kaliber 155 mm bahkan lebih efektif lagi dalam medan perang karena mampu menjangkau sasaran hingga 40 kilometer.

Selain peremajaan alutsista, Ariyadi juga menyinggung kebijakan pembinaan personel yang tengah digodok oleh Mabes TNI AD, yakni sistem ‘career by design’. Dalam sistem ini, personel berkualitas akan terus dipantau dan diberi arahan dengan penugasan, jabatan, serta lingkungan kerja. “Tujuannya untuk mendorong perwira-perwira terpilih mencapai puncak karier tertinggi,” tuturnya. Kemhan Uji Coba 22 Unit Roket R-Han 122

Baturaja, DMC - Kementerian Pertahanan Republik Indonesia melalui Direktorat Teknik Industri Pertahanan Direktorat Jenderal Potensi Pertahanan (Dirtekindhan Ditjen Pothan) bersama Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (LAPAN) kembali melakukan uji coba Roket R-Han 122. Uji coba dilakukan di Pusat Latihan Tempur TNI AD, Baturaja, Sumatera Selatan., Jum’at (25/11).

Selain bersama LAPAN, dalam uji coba tersebut Kemhan juga melibatkan pihak – pihak terkait dari industri pertahanan dalam negeri antara lain PT. Pindad, PT. DI dan PT. Dahana. Selain itu, Kemhan juga mengundangan TNI AL sebagai calon pengguna Roket R-Han 122.

Uji coba kali ini merupakan hasil dari evalusi uji coba yang dilakukan sebelumnya pada bulan November 2010 di tempat yang sama. Melalui uji coba dan evaluasi secara terus menerus diharapkan Program Roket Nasional dengan nama R-Han 122 tersebut nantinya dapat mencapai hasil yang maksimal dan siap diproduksi sesuai keinginan pengguna dalam hal ini TNI.


Dalam Uji coba kali ini, diluncurkan Roket R-Han 122 sebanyak 22 unit yang terdiri dari tiga unit warhead smoke (asap) dan 19 unit wearhead live (tajam). Dari 22 unit tersebut, satu unit roket warhead smoke (asap) telah diluncurkan Kamis Sore (24/11), sedangkan 21 unit seluruhnya diuji coba pada Jum’at (25/11). Peluncuran berjalan lanjar dan sukses meskii dalam cuaca hujan.

Dari 21 unit Roket R-Han 122 yang diluncurkan hari ini terdiri dari satu dua roket warhead smoke (asap) dan 19 unit roket warhead live (tajam). Peluncuran roket dibagi dalam tempat tahap dilaksanakan secara salvo menggunakan mobil launcher. Tahap satu tiga unit, kedua enam unit, ketiga enam unit dan keempat enam unit.

Roket R-Han 122 yang memiliki jarak jangkau 14 kilometer tersebut merupakan hasil kerjasama yang sinergi antara Kementerian Pertahanan dengan Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi, LAPAN, PT. Pindad, dan pihak terkait lainnya. Pengembangan roket R-Han 122 dalam rangka mengurangi ketergantungan pengadaan dari luar negeri dengan memberdayakan potensi dan kemampuan industri pertahanan dalam negeri.

Hadir menyaksikan dan menijau secara langsung uji coba Roket R-Han 122 antara lain Staf Ahli Menhan Bidang Keamanan Kemhan Mayjen TNI Zaenal Fahri Tamzis dan sejumlah pejabat di lingkungan Kemhan, Mabes TNI AL dan industri pertahanan dalam negeri. (BDI/SR)

Turkey and Indonesia Near Arms Agreements

Turkey and Indonesia are close to signing several defense agreements altogether worth $400 million, procurement officials and industry sources said Tuesday.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, and Turkey have increasingly closer political relations, and their industrial ties also are boosting. The two countries decided to bolster their defense cooperation when President Abdullah Gül visited Jakarta in April as a guest of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, when the two nations signed a defense industry pact.

Later, major defense industry companies from both nations met multiple times to explore potential areas of cooperation. They decided to work together in military electronics, rockets and armored vehicles.

As a result, Aselsan, Turkey’s military electronics powerhouse, and its Indonesian counterparts agreed on Aselsan’s production of several types of military radios and other wireless equipment for the Indonesian military.

Roketsan, Turkey’s state-owned rocket maker, reached a general agreement to produce various short-range rockets for the Indonesians.

Meanwhile, private Turkish vehicle-maker FNSS agreed to develop a 6X6 wheeled tactical vehicle for the Indonesians. FNSS already is the maker of 6X6 and 8X8 Pars armored vehicles. Under the agreement with Indonesia, FNSS will modify the Pars 6X6 and then the two sides jointly will manufacture it.

The Aselsan deal is expected to be signed before the year ends, industry sources told the Hürriyet Daily News. Roketsan and the FNSS deals are expected to be closed in 2012. The Aselsan agreement should exceed $100 million, and the two other deals are expected to cost around $150 million both.

Separately, a team of German and Turkish companies and Turkey’s procurement agency are seeking to jointly sell two HDW-class Type-209 submarines to Indonesia’s navy. They are competing against South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine.

First HIMARS Battery Operational

Pinpoint accuracy over distances as long as 70 kilometres. This is just one of the capabilities which the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) brings to the table.

On 5 Sep, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially welcomed the HIMARS into its fold with a ceremony to mark its commissioning and the operationalisation of the first HIMARS battery at Khatib Camp.

During the ceremony, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen saw a demonstration of the deployment and operation of the HIMARS as part of a networked force that included other land platforms.


In his speech, Dr Ng said: "The successful induction of the HIMARS reflects well on the ability of the SAF to respond decisively to new challenges and changing circumstances in its operational environment."

Equipped with the Battlefield Management System (BMS), the HIMARS is fully connected to its command headquarters and Strike Observer Mission Teams on the ground. Other SAF air and land platforms, such as fighter aircraft and infantry fighting vehicles, are also connected via the BMS.

With the enhanced situational awareness and transmission of critical battlefield information provided by the BMS, the HIMARS can quickly respond to calls for fire and deliver precision fire on targets.

Deadly accurate and mobile, each HIMARS launcher can dispatch its six rockets within 45 seconds to targets 70km away with an accuracy of 10 metres. Its 6.6 litre turbo-charged diesel engine powers the almost 16-ton behemoth to a top speed of 94kmh.


"With its long range and speed, the HIMARS can stay well behind the front line. When opposing forces open fire, we are able to stay well out of its range but yet still be able to deliver accurate counter-fire." explained Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Koh, Commanding Officer, 23rd Battalion Singapore Artillery (23 SA).

While the Singapore Army's 3rd Generation transformation leverages on technology that provides superior weaponry and reduces reliance on manpower, it translates into heavier responsibilities for the three-man crew which operates each HIMARS launcher. "It is ultimately the professionalism and commitment of our people that will translate the latest weapon systems into effective capabilities," said Dr Ng.

This message was not lost on each of the crew members who work as a tightly integrated team to operate the HIMARS. "When the fire mission comes down, all three of us are very independent and we know exactly what to do," said Full-time National Serviceman 3rd Sergeant Daniel Tan, citing the comprehensive training which the Battery has undergone in the past 12 months.

The SAF took delivery of the HIMARS in July last year, and conducted its inaugural battery live firing in November 2010 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, US.

The HIMARS, which is operated by Bravo Battery of 23 SA, provides artillery forces with precision fire power, enhanced mobility and advanced networking capabilities.

Enhanced Protection

The HIMARS is equipped with the Increased Crew Protection cabin, which is designed to protect the three-man operating crew against plume gases, rocket launch debris and small arms.

Enhanced Networking Capabilities

The HIMARS is equipped with the Battlefield Management System (BMS) which enables it to connect with the Artillery Headquarters and Strike Observer Mission Teams on the ground as well as other air and land platforms, such as infantry fighting vehicles, main battle tanks, attack helicopters and fighter aircraft. With enhanced situational awareness and transmission of key battlefield information provided by the BMS, the HIMARS can respond quickly to call-for-fires and deliver precision fires on enemy targets.

Brazil releases funds to develop surface to surface missile system for the Army

The Brazilian government gave a clear signal Monday that is intends to advance in the consolidation of a defense industry in the country. A decree signed by President Dilma Rousseff releases 45 million Real in funds for the launching of the Astros Project 2020 to equip the Brazilian army.

The project with a total value of almost 1.1 billion Real provides for the acquisition of the most advanced surface to surface missile launch system developed in Brazil. The Astros 2020 is an evolved version of the Astros II, the best selling product manufactured by Avibras Aerospace.

Exported to many countries the Astros (Artillery SaTuration ROcket System) is considered a market-leader among the small and highly competitive group of manufacturers of such systems.

Altogether the project includes the purchase of 49 vehicles by the Brazilian army divided into three batteries: 18 launch vehicles, 18 ammo re-supply vehicles, three fire control units, three weather stations, three recovery vehicles and three armoured command and control vehicles for each battery and another final vehicle for integrated command and control.

The main advantage of the new concept is the incorporation of the AV-TM, a high precision cruise missiles with a range of 300 kilometers. Unlike the rockets, which have a ballistic trajectory, defined from the impulse they receive at launch, this missile is guided and its trajectory can be controlled. Another important advance is the in the electronics system which is entirely digital.

The Astros II are normally grouped in artillery batteries consisting on average of about 13 vehicles: 6 of them are Astros II launchers, 6 are rocket resupply trucks and one a special radar-equipped vehicle controlling the fire control system. The launcher is capable of firing rockets of different calibers armed with a range of warheads.

The Astros II artillery system entered service with the Brazilian Army in 1983. The system is battle proven, having been used in action by the Iraqi Army in the Gulf Wars. In the 1980s, Avibrás sold an estimated sixty-six Astros II artillery systems to Iraq. Iraq also built the Sajil-60 which is a license-built version of the Brazilian SS-60. Sixty Astros II were sold to Saudi Arabia and an unspecified number sold to Bahrain and Qatar. Total sales of the Astros II between 1982 and 1987 reached one billion dollars.

This fact made the Astros II multiple rocket launcher the most profitable weapon produced by Avibrás.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, Avibrás worked almost exclusively with the manufacturing of rockets and multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), such as the Astros II, in addition to developing antitank and anti-ship missiles. At its peak, Avibrás employed 6,000 people; later it would be reduced to 900 people in the early 1990s as the arms industry demand fell. Even so, in the first Gulf War in 1991, the Astros II was successfully used by Saudi Arabia against Iraq. Years later, the Astros II system helped Angola to defeat the UNITA rebels.
